Why Am I Bloated All the Time? Simple Ways to Feel Better

Do you regularly wake up with a fairly flat stomach but feel uncomfortable and bloated by the end of the day?

Bloating is extremely common, but that does not make it any less frustrating. Your stomach may feel full, tight or swollen, your clothes may become uncomfortable and the scales can leave you feeling confused.

If you are asking, “Why am I bloated all the time?”, your food, fluid intake, digestion and eating habits may all play a part.

Is bloating the same as weight gain?

Bloating and body-fat gain are not the same.

Stomach bloating can fluctuate throughout the day and may be caused by gas, constipation, water retention or digestive discomfort. Body-fat changes happen more gradually.

However, bloating can make you feel as though you have gained weight and may affect your confidence. Understanding the difference between bloating and weight gain can help you avoid unnecessary panic or extreme dieting.

What causes bloating?

There is no single cause that applies to everybody. Common reasons can include:

  • Eating too quickly

  • Large or late meals

  • Fizzy drinks

  • Alcohol

  • Salty or highly processed foods

  • Constipation

  • Increasing fibre too quickly

  • Food intolerances

  • Swallowing air while eating

  • Certain digestive conditions, including IBS

This is why randomly cutting out lots of foods is not always the answer. What causes bloating in one person may be perfectly manageable for somebody else.

How to reduce bloating

Start with a few simple changes:

  • Drink water regularly throughout the day.

  • Slow down and chew your food properly.

  • Try smaller meals rather than enormous portions.

  • Reduce fizzy drinks and excessive alcohol.

  • Walk regularly to support normal digestion.

  • Increase fibre gradually if your diet is currently low in fibre.

  • Keep a food and symptom diary to identify patterns.

Avoid changing everything at once. Making one or two changes at a time makes it easier to understand what is helping.

Regular or persistent bloating should not automatically be blamed on food. The NHS recommends speaking to your GP if you are frequently bloated, it does not go away, dietary changes have not helped, or you also experience symptoms such as unintentional weight loss or blood in your stool. Read the current NHS guidance on bloating.
